About Website Color Palettes
Website color palettes are specifically curated for digital interfaces where readability, accessibility, and visual hierarchy are paramount. Unlike print or fashion palettes, web-optimized color schemes must account for screen rendering, WCAG contrast ratios, interactive states, and responsive design across devices.
A complete website palette typically includes five to seven colors: a primary brand color, a secondary accent, a success/confirmation color (usually green), an error/warning color (usually red), and two to three neutral tones for backgrounds, text, and borders. This systematic approach ensures that every UI element has an appropriate color without ad-hoc decisions.
The most critical consideration for website palettes is contrast. WCAG 2.1 requires a minimum 4.5:1 contrast ratio for normal text and 3:1 for large text. This means your text color and background color must have sufficient difference in luminance. Light text on dark backgrounds and dark text on light backgrounds are the two fundamental approaches.
Modern website design trends favor neutral-dominant palettes with a single bold accent. This approach keeps the interface clean while ensuring that calls-to-action and interactive elements stand out clearly. The accent color becomes the most important color decision in the entire palette.
For SaaS products, consider that users spend hours in your interface. Calm, low-contrast palettes with strategic pops of color reduce eye fatigue while maintaining usability. For landing pages, higher-contrast, more colorful palettes can work because users spend less time on them.
